Do you ever do that thing where you Google ‘famous people born on this day’? Or wonder who shares your birthday? Well today, July 20 is marked as the birthday for Alexander the Great. Rather than talk about the ancient empires, war and conquering, incidentally, today is also Elliott Yamin’s birthday. Maybe you remember him from American Idol back in season 5 where he made it to 3rd place in the finals? I hadn’t really thought much about him, or his music until I heard his song, Wait For You recently. You can listen here:
I learned that Elliott Yamin has faced a great deal of adversity in his life and career. He navigates life through severe diabetes, and a near 80% hearing loss. And still music is made. I love this quote from Yamin: he says,
“To me, obstacles in life build character. You have to be able to overcome adversity in order to succeed and appreciate the simple things life has to offer… that’s where most of my inspiration for writing and singing comes from”.
The song is a beautiful ballad written about waiting for love to return in a relationship. I think we can all relate to that; believing in someone and wishing the best for them. Or even, waiting out a difficult time in a relationship, having faith that things will get better once the ‘crazy town’ has passed. But when I listen, I can also imagine it being a song about me, and to me. It’s like my higher self is patiently waiting for my façade self to come back into alignment. There is always patience, understanding and compassion for the many reasons I have to over-think, tap dance around my issues, self-sabotage or forget about self-care completely because somehow my higher self knows that in the end it will all come around. So she waits and holds the space for me. And she reminds me that she will never give up, because I am so worth the wait.
