What’s love got to do with it?

I love Tina Turner.  Being a tween through the 1980’s, I remember seeing her in the movie Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome (1985) with Mel Gibson, which is of course where her song, We Don’t Need Another Hero became a hit.  Seeing a strong, sexy, black woman made such an impression on this ten year old girl from small town Ontario.  I remember thinking, “Wow, she’s awesome!  I wish she was my mom!”  I had no idea then that Tina Turner had been married to Ike Turner, had endured years of abuse during their marriage and music careers, and was just starting to rocket into stardom as a solo artist.

When I listen to her music it allows me to relate and release.  Either figuratively or literally, we can put on Tina Turner and dance around, shake it out, move those hips, release the anger and frustration to make way for better things – not to mention wake up our sexy, sassy side.  The notes she sings are pulled from deep within, delivered with an intense, gritty texture.  I can’t sing like her, but I feel her when she sings.  I am humbled and inspired by the openness, talent, raw emotion, sexiness and inspiration her music imparts.  She brings to life undeniable strength and a strong female energy.

In a 2005 interview Oprah Winfrey summarized why fans love Tina Turner.  She said, “You don’t just dance and sing. You represent possibility. When people see you performing, they know you’ve come up from the ashes, from the depths of despair. It means that however down a woman is, she can be like you.”  Tina Turner represents the phoenix-like possibility that the energy of violence, anger and despair can be transformed into healing, creativity and sensuality through music.

Now happy in her 25+ year relationship, and reaping the benefits of her successes, when asked, “What’s love got to do with it?” her answer is, “Everything.”  Like I said, I love Tina Turner.
